Salicylic Acid

Beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates and unclogs pores.

Also known as: 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, salicylate; BHA.

What it is
Salicylic acid is a lipophilic (oil-soluble) beta hydroxy acid derived from willow bark or synthesized chemically. It penetrates sebum-filled pores to dissolve dead skin cells and excess oil from within.
What it does
Salicylic acid exfoliates the stratum corneum and descends into the follicle to break down keratin plugs and sebum buildup. This reduces congestion, minimizes pore appearance, and prevents comedones. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it effective for acne-prone and oily skin.
The evidence
Strong clinical evidence supports its efficacy for acne, comedone reduction, and mild sebum control at 0.5–2% concentrations. Multiple randomized controlled trials confirm superiority over placebo and equivalence to benzoyl peroxide for mild-to-moderate acne.
Best for
Oily, acne-prone, and congested skin; blackheads and whiteheads; keratosis pilaris.
Pairs well with
Niacinamide, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids (when introduced gradually), and hydrating humectants like glycerin.
Use cautiously with
Other strong exfoliants (AHAs, vitamin C at low pH, retinoids) in the same routine to prevent irritation; avoid with sulfites in sensitive individuals.
Cautions
Can cause dryness, irritation, and increased sun sensitivity; avoid during pregnancy (category C); not recommended for aspirin-sensitive individuals; start low (0.5–1%) and increase frequency gradually.
