SPR

The U.S. emergency oil stockpile whose releases and refills swing crude prices and energy stocks.

Also known as: Strategic Petroleum Reserve

What it is
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the U.S. government's emergency crude oil stockpile held in underground salt caverns. The government can release barrels to calm prices or refill to rebuild stocks. It is a policy lever on the oil market.
What it does
Large SPR releases add supply and can pressure crude prices, while refill programs create a demand floor. Investors read SPR policy for crude-price direction affecting producers and refiners. It is a government hand on a commodity market.
The evidence
Coordinated SPR releases have been used to counter oil-price spikes, with refill announcements later seen as demand support.
Best for
Oil producers and refiners: XOM, CVX, OXY, VLO; ETF XLE.
Pairs well with
sanctions, lng-export-permit, ira-tax-credits
Use cautiously with
The SPR is small relative to global demand; overrating its ability to control prices can lead to bad crude bets.
Cautions
Releases are temporary and can be swamped by OPEC decisions and demand shifts.
