Hydration & Barrier
Squalane
Lightweight plant-derived oil that mimics skin's natural moisture barrier.
Also known as: Squalane (INCI), derived from sugarcane or olives; also called norisoprenoid.
- What it is
- Squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon derived from plant sources (typically sugarcane or olives) that closely mimics squalene, a natural lipid already present in human skin sebum. It's odorless, colorless, and highly stable.
- What it does
- Squalane penetrates the skin quickly to reinforce the lipid barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and improving hydration without a greasy feel. It also has mild antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that support skin barrier integrity and may reduce irritation from other actives.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports its efficacy for barrier repair and hydration; multiple studies confirm it reduces TEWL and improves skin moisture retention. Moderate evidence for anti-inflammatory benefits in sensitive or compromised skin.
- Best for
- All skin types, especially dry, sensitive, compromised, or barrier-damaged skin; ideal for post-procedure care and as a base for active ingredients.
- Pairs well with
- Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, peptides, retinol, vitamin C, and other actives—it stabilizes and enhances their delivery without interference.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts. Safe to layer with most ingredients; may slightly reduce efficacy of water-based humectants if applied before them, so apply humectants first.
- Cautions
- Generally well-tolerated; rare allergic reactions possible in those sensitive to plant oils. Non-comedogenic at typical use levels, but very high concentrations may occlude pores in acne-prone skin.
