Calcium Hydroxylapatite
Mineral scaffold that stimulates collagen and restores lost volume.
Also known as: Calcium hydroxyapatite, CaHA, Radiesse (brand name)
- What it is
- Calcium hydroxylapatite is a biocompatible mineral compound identical to the mineral phase of human bone and teeth. When suspended in a gel carrier, it forms a scaffold that provides immediate volume while triggering the body's own collagen production over months.
- What it does
- CaHA works in two phases: the gel carrier provides immediate lift and support, while the microspheres act as a biostimulatory scaffold that recruits fibroblasts and stimulates new collagen deposition. Over 12–24 months, the product is gradually replaced by the body's own collagen, creating a longer-lasting result than hyaluronic acid alone. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and bone-conductive properties.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports its safety and efficacy for facial volume restoration and collagen stimulation, with multiple peer-reviewed studies showing sustained results at 12+ months. Moderate evidence exists for its use in non-facial areas and combination protocols.
- Best for
- Moderate to severe facial volume loss, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and patients seeking longer-lasting results than HA fillers; ideal for those with realistic expectations about gradual collagen remodeling.
- Pairs well with
- Hyaluronic acid fillers (for fine lines), botulinum toxin (for dynamic wrinkles), microneedling (to enhance collagen response), and other biostimulators like poly-L-lactic acid.
- Use cautiously with
- Avoid combining with silicone or permanent fillers; use caution with active infections or severe immunosuppression; not recommended in areas prone to movement-related granulomas.
- Cautions
- Temporary swelling, bruising, and nodule formation possible; rare granulomas reported; not recommended during pregnancy or active skin infections; may cause mild discomfort on injection.
