Alpha Arbutin
Gentle tyrosinase inhibitor that fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Also known as: α-Arbutin, 4-Hydroxyphenyl β-D-glucopyranoside, hydroquinone glucoside; also called arbutin.
- What it is
- Alpha arbutin is a naturally derived compound (from bearberry and other plants) that is a glycosylated form of hydroquinone. It works as a prodrug, meaning the body converts it into hydroquinone, which then inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase responsible for melanin production.
- What it does
- It reduces melanin synthesis by blocking tyrosinase activity, which fades existing dark spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and melasma over time. It is gentler and more stable than free hydroquinone, making it suitable for longer-term use and sensitive skin. Results typically appear after 4–8 weeks of consistent application.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports its efficacy for hyperpigmentation and melasma; multiple studies show it is comparable to hydroquinone at 2% concentration but with less irritation. Evidence is robust for safety and tolerability in long-term use.
- Best for
- All skin types with melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, age spots, or uneven tone; especially suited to sensitive skin and those who cannot tolerate hydroquinone.
- Pairs well with
- Niacinamide, vitamin C, glycolic acid, kojic acid, and sunscreen (essential). Works well in layered brightening protocols.
- Use cautiously with
- Avoid combining with other hydroquinone products or high-dose vitamin C (pH-dependent; may reduce efficacy). Use caution with strong exfoliants if skin is compromised.
- Cautions
- Generally well-tolerated, but can cause mild irritation or dryness in sensitive skin at high concentrations (>2%). Ochronosis (blue-black discoloration) is rare but possible with prolonged use at very high doses; sun protection is mandatory to prevent rebound pigmentation.
