Soothing & Repair

Allantoin

Soothing compound that accelerates skin healing and reduces irritation.

Also known as: 5-Ureidohydantoin, glyoxal diureide; same name in INCI.

What it is
Allantoin is a naturally occurring compound found in comfrey root and uric acid metabolism. It's now synthesized for cosmetic use and is a well-established skin-conditioning agent with wound-healing properties.
What it does
Allantoin promotes skin cell proliferation and accelerates the healing of damaged or irritated skin. It works by stimulating fibroblast activity, increasing collagen deposition, and enhancing skin barrier function. It also has mild keratolytic properties that help remove dead skin cells, making it useful for both acute irritation and chronic dryness.
The evidence
Strong clinical evidence supports its use for wound healing, irritation reduction, and skin repair; multiple studies confirm efficacy at 0.5–2% concentrations for accelerating epithelialization and reducing inflammation.
Best for
Sensitive, irritated, compromised, or post-procedure skin; eczema-prone and reactive skin types.
Pairs well with
Panthenol, centella asiatica, niacinamide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid for enhanced soothing and barrier repair.
Use cautiously with
No major conflicts; generally compatible with most actives including retinoids and vitamin C.
Cautions
Very well tolerated; no known irritation, photosensitivity, or pregnancy concerns at cosmetic concentrations.
