Hydration & Barrier
Beta-Glucan
Polysaccharide that hydrates and strengthens skin barrier function.
Also known as: Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, yeast beta-glucan, fungal polysaccharide, same name.
- What it is
- Beta-glucan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived primarily from yeast cell walls (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) or oat bran. It's a chain of glucose molecules linked in a specific pattern that gives it unique biological activity in skin.
- What it does
- Beta-glucan acts as a humectant, drawing water into the stratum corneum to improve hydration and skin plumpness. It also activates skin immune receptors (Dectin-1), triggering production of cytokines and growth factors that strengthen barrier function, reduce inflammation, and support wound healing and collagen synthesis.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports hydration and barrier-strengthening effects; multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm improved skin moisture, elasticity, and reduced transepidermal water loss. Evidence for immune activation and anti-inflammatory benefit is moderate to strong in both in vitro and in vivo models.
- Best for
- Dehydrated, sensitive, compromised, or inflamed skin; barrier repair; post-procedure soothing.
- Pairs well with
- Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, centella asiatica, peptides, and other barrier-supporting actives.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts; generally well-tolerated alongside most ingredients. May be redundant if combined with multiple other humectants at high concentration.
- Cautions
- Well-tolerated and non-irritating; suitable for pregnancy and sensitive skin. No known sun-sensitivity or prescription interactions.
